Alternative Rock, alt rock or alternative music is a type of rock music that originated in the 1980's and became popular by the mid 1990's. It often features a distorted guitar sound and a distinctive nonchalant vocal style. Acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Beck and Liz Phair helped popularize the genre while more current alt rockers such as Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and the White Stripes help evolve the sound.
