My Story
A lot of ideas pass between people, and I’m interested in gathering as many as possible, whether they come to me through a never-ending Russian novel or a decent human being. However, this only happens when people get a bit sincere with each other and let go of the irony and sarcasm that generally substitutes for conversation.
I like getting lost in culture: moody music, snotty books, wine that does not taste like water or candy, and clothes that fit right. But as an educator I try to push sincerity and try to steer my students away from relying strictly on the dictations of culture. It’s hard because culture is delicious and looks pretty good, but people are generally more interesting than their mp3s or a well-designed satchel.
Again, sincerity goes a long way with me. So does indulgent relaxation, selfishly rich dinners, conversations about nothing very important, and conversation about things that are terribly important.
