Abby Wambach and Wife Share Kiss at World Cup

Abby Wambach and Wife at US Open

I’m a gooey romantic at heart and so when I saw Abby Wambach kiss her wife, Sarah Huffman at her soccer game I just fell into pieces. It was amazing and adorable! A beautiful moment between a couple in love and the only thing that made it better is what Abby Wambach had to share about her stance on gay relationships.

The first thing that Abby Wambach wants to clear up is that in no way was her marriage due to a political rally but she was wed to her teammate Sarah Huffman because she was in love. They are quickly becoming the most popular gay, athletic couple that are married.

It’s important for Wambach and Huffman not to press for a story on their marriage and make it a farce but also not to hide because they know they are role models for closeted and scared people who are gay everywhere.

Some of the comments that Wambach have provided on being in a lesbian marriage are,

“I know that I’ll end up being a role model for many, many people out there for all kinds of reasons, My first hope is for being a genuine, honest and good person, then a great soccer player and then down the line, the choice I’ve made to marry not only my best friend and teammate, but the love of my life.”

It’s important that people in the public paint gay marriage as a real thing and Wambach has that perfect balance between not putting it all out there but not hiding it as well. They got married before it was legalized in the USA and her thoughts on it were perfectly articulated. She said,

“I wasn’t going to wait for a state to legalize it for my own life,” She has also said, on the topic of her marriage,

“I can’t speak for other people, but for me, I feel like gone are the days that you need to come out of a closet. I never felt like I was in a closet. I never did. I always felt comfortable with who I am and the decisions I made, I’ve never been asked a question in my soccer world about my relationship, rightfully so because it shouldn’t matter because it doesn’t have anything to do with soccer but I realize I’m a public figure and people are curious about my private life. I’m honestly not the kind of person who wants to step up to a podium, test the microphone and be like, ‘Hey, I’m homosexual and this is who I am, hear me roar.’ That’s not who I am.”

Abby Wambach

We wish Abby Wambach the best in the soccer world and in the world of being a public figure! We thank her for her candid comments on an issue that’s incredibly prevalent in the USA right now and with huge figures stepping up it makes it easier for those without as much influence to feel safe and find a place in the world where they are not accepted.
