Barbara Keene in Gotham

Gotham and bisexual relationships

Welcome to “Gotham”, the gritty new FOX series that depicts the early years of James Gordon, famed Commissioner of Gotham City and flat-footed ally to Batman. We see Gotham City in its former glory, we get a chance to understand why the city is as dirty and corrupt as it is and we’re also introduced to a variety of iconic villains in their adolescent forms.

The producers of Gotham obviously worked hard to achieve an edgy and gritty feel for the show but when you want to make it even more edgy what do you do? Make Jim Gordon’s fiancé, Barbara Keene a sexy and strong bisexual woman that’s what!

I’ll admit. I’m a bit of a nerd so trust me, if the comics had suggested Commissioner Gordon’s wife liked to play both sides of the field, I would have known about it. In the early episodes of “Gotham”, it’s revealed that the future Mrs. Gordon (played by Erin Richards) has had a past relationship with Detective Renee Montoya (played by Victoria Cartagena). Without including any spoilers, there’s already been a great deal of tension as Montoya has concerns about Jim Gordon and his activities on the force. The fact that he’s paired with Harvey Bullock certainly has not helped with Gordon’s reputation.

It’s an interesting look into bisexual relationships and how future relationships develop or are effected when old skeletons come out of the closet. Are Detective Montoya’s concerns valid? Is there more jealousy involved with her actions than pure police work? Either way we seem to get a glimpse of the type of person Barbara Keene is interested in. No matter if she is in a straight or lesbian relationship, it’s clear she prefers a more “take-charge” person. I, like many women are interested in seeing more of this character and more relationships like this depicted in prime-time TV shows.
