Kim Davis VS Kentucky

As if we don’t put up with enough crap, we now have to deal with righteous (and extremely misguided) people like Kim Davis trying to mess with our right to get married.

I’ll put it simply: religion doesn’t belong anywhere near a government job. Believe what you wish in your personal time, but when you’re on the clock and a federal law has been passed, the best way to avoid getting the $4 Wal-Mart pants sued off of you is to just do your damn job. Trying to get laws passed for ‘religious freedom’ isn’t going to do diddly-shit, either, except legally allow people to oppress others based on their misinterpretation of whichever holy text they follow. It is going to open several million cans of worms, and the country will be filled with people gleefully shouting, “RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!” every time they crush someone else’s views or deny them the chance to do something because they do not follow the same doctrine. Citing ‘God’s authority’ as your reason for not issuing a same-sex marriage license is wrong on so many levels. This is how wars start, I’m pretty sure.

The court doesn’t hold people in contempt and take them into custody lightly. A judge didn’t just wake up one morning and say, “You know what? That Kim Davis is getting really annoying, let’s just lock her and her Bump-It ™ away for a little while.” U.S. District Judge David Bunning also didn’t think a fine would really send the message home, as he was sure that her wild-eyed, fanatical (crazypants, bible-thumping, gun-toting, misguided…) supporters would simply pool their sock-and-bra money to pay for it, thus negating the purpose of the fine to begin with. (Author’s Note: For future reference, socks and bras are not acceptable places to carry around your money. Try a wallet.)

“If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that’s what potentially causes problems,” Bunning said. “The court cannot condone the wilful disobedience of its lawfully issued order…It’s not physically impossible for her to issue the licenses – she’s choosing not to.” So her arms aren’t broken? She can file paperwork, and isn’t illiterate or incapable of signing her own name..? Apparently that’s all true, and Davis responded by stating that she would not step down as Rowan County clerk because she is “a vessel God has chosen for this time and place” who wants to use the county office to “spread God’s word.”

Oh, so she’s just batshit insane. Okay.
