Ellen Degeneres’s Coming out Story

Ellen Degeneres – Coming Out Story

Biography.com has put together a a great bio about Ellen DeGeneres coming out story. It talks about her rise with her comedic fame and how the world reacted to her after she came out! She was crushed by the public backlash and how she decided to live her life anyways. Below is her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Whether you’re gay or straight when you hear the name Ellen DeGeneres you probably automatically have thoughts of laughter coming to your mind. The good thing however is that you’re definitely not making fun of her you just realize that she’s one of the top comedians. Ellen has a way of putting a smile on your face and when you watch her show she gives you a feeling of a humble person who is working her way to make the world better. It almost seems impossible to you that somebody as chill and well rounded as Ellen has ever had to go through struggles of her own. Her dancing has you laughing and dancing along but what about life before she became a fearless, joyous woman who got to run her own talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Ellen has had a struggle coming out. She was a popular comedian before she came out as gay and had her own talk show but coming out in the public eye was incredibly difficult for her. Ellen announced that she was gay on her sitcom The Ellen Show in 1997. In the show she was talking to her psychiatrist, played by another very renowned talk show host Oprah Winfrey and said how she has only clicked with females before.

Days before that show aired Ellen has a sit down with 20/20 and spoke about how she was scared of how people would react. If they would still find her funny if she came out and support her. She did as a decision for herself because she would always be gay and there was no use hiding it and as a decision to help out teenagers who are struggling with the same problems that she is. Ellen too had to deal with the pain that telling family causes and was hurt by her family with words and kicked out for a long while.

After the show aired in which she admitted that she was gay she also lost all of her sponsors who refused to advertise on The Ellen Show. This ultimately led to the shows downfall and the show having to be cancelled.

Ellen has had to deal with the extreme, unnecessary criticism that accompanies coming out but she is definitely working her way to the top and helping anybody she can on her way.

She teamed up with JCPenney as their spokesperson and they let her continue even when a radical group called One Million Moms threatened to boycott the company if they didn’t get rid of a gay spokesperson. The company also was one of the first to feature same sex couples in advertising instead of hetero sexual couples for Father’s Day and Mother’s Day.

We also know about the group selfie Ellen took when she hosted the 2014 Oscars featuring a mass of celebrities and becoming one of the most liked and re-tweeted pictures at that time within only a day.

Ellen and her mother Betty DeGeneres both fight for gay rights. Everybody should be treated with respect and equality and Ellen is one of the person who took the step to come out and help others out as well.

Her old show, The Ellen Show, used to be on Netflix but recently they took it down (and I cried) I would suggest tracking it down somehow and watching it though because it’s definitely a great sitcom to sit down and marathon and you’ll see how far she has come. Thank you Ellen Degeneres!

Here is her struggle coming out to her parent on the show “Ellen” sitcom which ran from 1994 to 1998. The show is about Ellen Morgan, played by Ellen DeGeneres,  is a neurotic bookstore owner who deals with life through comedy and extensive rambling.
