The Lesbian Nutella Fiasco

Nutella Lesbian Issue

Who doesn’t love Nutella? Everybody loves Nutella and its popularity has only soared after the founder, Michele Ferrero, passed away earlier this year. Unfortunately  though the chocolate hazelnut spread we thought could do no wrong just ended up in a sticky mess.

If you haven’t heard about the new social media trend Nutella started it’s a fun generator you can use to customize Nutella jars with your own phrases and then post them to your wall and newsfeed on Facebook. It was really fun for everyone until some problems started to arise. The problem was banned words.

However, it wasn’t just banned words but the also, the double standards on banned words. Some of the words that were banned were Jewish and Muslim but Christian was okay. This means that phrases that were positive such as “A Jewish community and a Muslim community work together to help the homeless” would be banned. Although, it’s probably not super likely that people are personalizing their Nutella jars with religion, it is possible though.

Another word that was banned is the word lesbian although gay was okay. Many people are exhausted with the constant need to keep fighting for equality and so people are making their own Nutella tags and posting them on Twitter and Facebook to fight back against the ignorance of the company. We’ve dubbed this the Great Lesbian Nutella Fiasco!

It is understandable that these words can cause controversy but it’s not fair. Words like this are used to describe people and unless we are all being banned or all being allowed (which should probably be the case) then it hurts and continues to instill ideas of discrimination.
Ban swear words but don’t ban groups of people! This isn’t the first company that has done this. Apple has also had this issue when they banned words that could be engraved on their products that could be ordered on the apple website. So this isn’t the first time a company has done this but hopefully it will be the last time.

What are your thoughts on this Lesbian Nutella Fiasco?
